Alex Bugnon
Alex Bugnon has been a prolific, energetic force on the contemporary music scene for almost three decades. A renowned musician, composer and bandleader, Bugnon hales from the picturesque town of Caux, Switzerland – 4 miles above Montreux, site of the world famous Jazz Festival. No doubt, the annual convergence in his hometown and in his own home, of some of music’s most illustrious names played a role in his decision to pursue a musical career, as did his early friendship with Herbie Hancock. The fact that his uncle was the legendary Donald Byrd only served to further his decision. Bugnon left Montreux to continue his training at the Paris Conservatory before landing in Boston to study at the Berklee School of Music. It was here in the U.S. that his exposure to a diversity of musical styles, from R&B to gospel, Jazz and funk, began to shape and influence his personal sound. Shortly after moving to New York City, Alex began touring with almost every R&B artists, such as Melba Moore, Freddie Jackson, Patti Austin, James Ingram and Glenn Jones to name a few. But it would be his encounter with saxophonist Najee that would ultimately turn the tide for him. Signed to Orpheus Records, Najee would make the introduction that would result in Alex’s first recording contract. His first album, Love Season (1989) catapulted the virtual unknown to prominence and set him on his musical course. The album rocketed to number 2 on the R&B charts, was nominated for best jazz album at the Soul Train Awards, and earning him Black Radio Exclusive’s, Best New Artist Award. It was no coincidence that Alex was embraced by an R&B/soul audience, after all his love of music was rooted in an appreciation and understanding of classic jazz and soul-based artists, Horace Silver to Herbie Hancock, Thelonious Monk to Ahmad Jamal and from Art Blakey to Earth, Wind and Fire.” This was his inspiration and it easily translated into his own compositions and in his delivery of the standards. In 1991, he parted ways with Orpheus Records and signed with Epic to record his award-winning third album, 107 Degrees in the Shade (1991) for which he received another Soul Train Award, only losing to Quincy Jones’ Back on the Block! He released one more album under the Epic label, the best selling, This Time Around (1993), before signing with RCA for the critically acclaimed Tales from the Bright Side (1995). As the new millenium began, Alex was also beginning anew. Signed to the Narada/EMI label, He produced the first of four albums for the label; As Promised (2000) followed by Soul Purpose (2001), Southern Living (2003) and Free (2005). His next 3 CD’s were released under his own label, Xela Records, and another, The Best Of, released under Michael Cuscuna’s Mosaic label. Over almost 4 decades, Alex Bugnon has built a strong and loyal fan base across the country and around the world. His tour schedule has never eased, even besting the great Dizzy Gillespie’s record of appearances at Washington, D.C.’s Blues Alley. Last year marked Alex’s 25th consecutive year’s appearance at the legendary venue! He makes it a point of never missing a day of piano practice or of writing. If he is not composing, he is listening to his favorite artists and biggest influences: Herbie Hancock, McCoy Tyner, Red Garland, Ahmad Jamal, Kenny Kirkland, Mulgrew Miller, Wynton Kelly, Joe Sample, George Duke and Keith Jarrett.
Tia Fuller
When Grammy-nominated Mack Avenue recording artist, composer, and bandleader Tia Fuller picks up her saxophone, something amazing happens. Blending technical brilliance, melodic creativity, and the performing precision drawn from both her academic and stage experience, Fuller is a force to be reckoned with in the worlds of jazz, pop, R&B, and more. Currently, Fuller balances the worlds of performance and education, fulfilling a demanding schedule as both a busy touring and recording artist and a full-time professor at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. Fuller’s resume makes her uniquely qualified for these roles. The Denver, Colorado native graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music from Spelman College in Atlanta, GA, and summa cum laude with a Master’s degree in Jazz Pedagogy and Performance from the University of Colorado at Boulder. Already established as a leading jazz musician, Fuller was selected to be a member of the all-female band touring with Grammy-winning pop star Beyoncé. Performing as part of the I AM … Sasha Fierce and Beyoncé Experience World Tour on stages across the globe, Fuller also became a featured soloist on the Beyoncé Experience DVD (Me, Myself and I), I AM Yours I DVD (Wynn Theatre) and also appeared on number of major television shows, including Today Show, Good Morning America, The Oprah Winfrey Show, BET Awards, American Music Awards, Grammy Awards and as a featured soloist with Beyoncé for President Obama at the White House. An accomplished solo artist in her own right, Fuller has recorded five full-length projects with her quartet. Her most recent album, Diamond Cut, received a Grammy nomination in the Best Instrumental Jazz category; produced by three-time Grammy Award winner Terri Lyne Carrington, the album also features two superb rhythm sections, both of which contain some of jazz world’s brightest luminaries – bassist Dave Holland and Jack DeJohnette, then bassist James Genus and drummer Bill Stewart. Adding texture and harmonic support of several compositions are guitarist Adam Rogers and organist Sam Yahel. Additionally, Carrington contributes to two tracks with percussion. Fuller debuted in 2005 with her self-produced set, Pillar of Strength (Wambui); her sophomore release, Healing Space (2007/Mack Avenue), is an offering of “melodic medicine” and healing agents. Her third CD, Decisive Steps, also for the Mack Avenue label, received the number one JazzWeek rating for two weeks straight, landed at number three in JET magazine’s top jazz CDs listing, and was nominated for Best Jazz album by JazzWeek. And in 2012, she released her fourth album, Angelic Warrior, which received praise from The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, and numerous jazz publications. The saxophonist’s quartet has performed in countries and jazz fests around the world, including Angola, Croatia, South Africa, The Netherlands, Italy, Scotland, and the United States, just to name a few. Fuller can also be seen touring regularly with several bands. She has appeared with Terri Lyne Carrington to perform her Grammy-winning Mosaic Project and Money Jungle: Provocative in Blue; served as assistant musical director for Esperanza Spalding’s Radio Music Society tour; and recorded and toured with Dianne Reeves for her Grammy-winning Beautiful Life album. Her life-size image has been featured in more than 270 J.Jill display windows nationwide. In addition, Fuller will be featured in an exclusive Vanity Fair magazine shoot, celebrating women in jazz. Furthermore, Fuller has shared her experiences as a performer, educator, and first-time Grammy nominee as a female jazz musician via a timely opinion piece, on sexism in jazz for NBCNews.com, a feature story in the Associated Press and live interviews on such outlets as TV One’s Sister Circle. The dynamic saxophonist has also graced the cover of Downbeat Magazine, JazzTimes Magazine, Saxophone Today, Jazzed, and Jazz Education Journal. In addition, she has received numerous awards and marks of distinction including, winning JazzTimes Jazz Critics Poll for best alto saxophonist (2018), and Downbeat Critic’s Poll-Rising Star two years in a row in the categories of Soprano Sax in 2014 and Alto Sax and Flute in 2013. Michael Mayo
When you trust your gut, you give in to your most natural inclinations. By doing so, you have no choice but to be honest. Michael Mayo leans on his intuition as a vocalist, composer, songwriter, and arranger. Much like molding and shaping a sculpture out of clay, he stretches his voice through layers of heavenly harmonizing, hard-hitting beatboxing, and heartfelt crooning. The Los Angeles-based phenomenon creates from the heart without filter or pretense, allowing his voice to transmit raw emotion above an ever-evolving backdrop of jazz, neo-soul, and R&B on his second full-length LP, FLY [Mack Avenue Records/Artistry Music]. Born and raised in Los Angeles, music quite literally surrounded him. As a sought-after background vocalist, mom shined alongside Beyoncé, Diana Ross, Luther Vandross, and Whitney Houston. Meanwhile, dad not only sang, but also performed saxophone for Earth, Wind & Fire and horns for the likes of Sérgio Mendes. Among his most formative memories, Michael recalls “being backstage, watching Mom and Dad perform, and seeing them in their element.” Unlocking the power of his voice, he eventually attended the New England Conservatory of Music and at The Thelonious Monk Institute at UCLA (now the Hancock Institute of Jazz). 2018 saw him make waves with the single “No More” [with Amber Navran]. Following his graduation, he unveiled his full-length debut, Bones, in 2021 and cumulatively generated millions of streams accelerated by “The Way” and “You and You.” Earning critical acclaim, Jazzwise rated it “4-stars,” and JAZZIZ raved, “Michael Mayo has developed his own lush, neo-soul sound that adroitly showcases his clear tenor, which glides over luxuriant clouds of his multi-tracked vocals.” He captivated audiences worldwide, headlining his own gigs and touring with the likes of Herbie Hancock. Not to mention, he even garnered the German Jazz Pride award. In October 2023, he relocated from Brooklyn back to L.A. Getting into a groove, he wrote the majority of what would become FLY at home. During January 2024, he retreated to Bunker Studio in Brooklyn, recording the album in just two days with pianist Shai Maestro as well as Linda May Han Oh on upright and electric bass, and in-demand drummer extraordinaire Nate Smith. Together, the musicians collectively harnessed their incredible chemistry during the sessions, giving the music gravity, muscle, and soul anchored by their performances. Now, he introduces FLY with the single “Four.” On the track, he delivers a lively arrangement of the original Miles Davis melody of the same name. Opening up this world, jazzy piano gives way to steady claps. Michael alternates between fluttering vocals and a buoyant bebop-style harmony bouncing and surging with flare and finesse. A loose bassline propels the bridge, and his words strike a deep chord, “Of the wonderful things that you get out of life, there are four.” He also breathes new life into the genre standard “Just Friends.” His warm delivery practically hovers over finger-snaps and soft keys. Piano twinkles, bass thumps, and an anthemic chorus takes flight. Originally, Michael intended for this take of “Just Friends” to be a rehearsal to warm everybody up, but the heat couldn’t be contained… Composed by Michael, the title track “Fly” evokes a breezy energy. Horns and piano attempt to catch up to Michael’s sunny humming, speeding towards a bright crescendo teeming with light. “I care a lot about songwriting and arrangements,” he says. “I also wanted it to feel more free, open, and maybe cheerful. Those elements of lightness, flight, and freedom were important throughout the whole album, but you can especially hear them on ‘Fly.’” For the first time, he picked up a guitar in the studio for “Frenzy,” adding another shade to his sonic palette. “It started as a riff during the pandemic,” he recalls. “When I listen to it, I see beautiful images of nature. You feel the shift of the landscape as the song progresses. For me, it's about the imagery passing by and how it can shift.” Snaps and harmonies set the tempo for the a cappella “I Didn’t Know What Time It Was.” He flexes his range, balancing laidback verses with a stunning high register. The song captures the moment love strikes lightning, “I didn’t know what time it was, then I met you.” The ride concludes with a frenetic drum-fueled reimagining of Wayne Shorter’s “Speak No Evil.” Michael’s voice weaves in and out of the beat as Shai Maestro’s fleet-fingered piano playing mirrors the dynamics of Nate Smith’s drum groove. It offers a worthy homage to a legend gone-too-soon. Ultimately, Michael trusted his gut and delivered a definitive body of work.

Jimmie Highsmith Jr.
Jimmie Highsmith Jr., also known as Tjari, is a Grammy®-nominated saxophonist and flutist with critical acclaim, hailing from Rochester, NY. Throughout his career, he has graced the stage alongside numerous Grammy® Award winners, including the esteemed Najee, Alicia Keys, and Natalie Cole. I am also a proud endorser of Eastman Winds saxophones, Jody Jazz mouthpieces, and Silverstein Works ligatures. My journey in music began at the mere age of 6 when I started studyng piano. After being exposed to Saxophone, I started studying it at the age 8. After graduating from "PA" Rochester NY School of The Performing Arts in 1986, it led me to become a member of The Approaching Storm, the HBCU Delaware State University Marching Band. Although I initially enjoyed being part of the band, I realized that marching wasn't my true passion and returned to Rochester. There, I attended The Eastman School of Music where I studied during the summers of 1985 and 1986. My path took another turn when I decided to audition for The US Air Force Band in Washington DC at Bolling AFB. It was there that I discovered I would again be part of a marching band. I enlisted in the Air Force and dedicated ten years of service before transitioning to a full-time music career. To date, I have released 11 top-selling smooth jazz CDs and contributed to over 200 recordings as a collaborator. My sixth CD, "The Anthology of Sound," was honored with a Grammy® nomination, and my work is recognized as being among the best in the Smooth Jazz genre. I have been fortunate to receive several accolades throughout my career, including: * 2005: Inducted into the FDC Duke Ellington Hall of Fame * 2010: Pride of his Ancestors Award * 2011: Grammy® Nomination (First Round) * 2015: RCTV Black Music Month Community Achievement Award * 2018: BMA Musician of the Year * 2018: BreakThru Magazine Uplifting Award * 2019: Roc Awards Lifetime Achievement Award * 2025: Greater Roc Iconic Person * 2025 African American Who's Who of Rochester NY In recognition of my significant contributions to the music community, the Mayor of Rochester, Robert J. Duffy, proclaimed June 1st, 2007, as "Jimmie Highsmith Jr. Day" in Rochester, NY. This year in June of 2025 I am proud to announce that I will be releasing my first book: Highsmithism's Life's Messages and Anecdotes.
